Oryantal Dance (a.k.a Belly Dance)is a dance of isolation, in which the various parts and centers of the body are moved individually, independently from each other, yet end up forming unity.
Alia (Alice Warner) has studied and performed oriental dance for more than thirty years. She has traveled in Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and Syria and has had the pleasure of seeing and studying with some of the finest performers in the world. Presently she is a member of the Women of Selket Middle Eastern Dance Troupe. Previously she was a founding member of Richmond Arabesque and Dionysus Hellenic Dancers. She frequently performed at restaurants and clubs in Virginia.
Alia has taught for the recreation departments of Henrico and Chesterfield. She also taught privately for many years. Alia’s specialties include veil dancing, sword and zills. In addition she is well known for the costumes she has created for herself and others. Her major goals in teaching are to help each student to develop her own style, to understand the cultural background of the dance and to gain an appreciation of Arabic music.
